Qld candidate pledges kid’s book event

Eleven days after the axing of Queensland’s literary awards, a Brisbane lord mayoral candidate says he’ll introduce an annual literary event for children’s books if he’s elected.

Labor candidate Ray Smith says he’ll launch a $50,000 annual Children’s Great Book Gala to foster a love of reading and improve literacy if he’s elected on April 28.

Earlier this month Premier and former Brisbane lord mayor Campbell Newman copped criticism from writers after he slashed the state-funded literary awards to save $245,000.

Mr Smith says his proposed gala event would provide a platform for Brisbane children’s authors and illustrators.

“The gala will see libraries, schools and bookshops all over Brisbane hosting events such as book readings by children’s authors, workshops and recognition awards for Brisbane-based authors and illustrators,” Mr Smith said in a statement.

“The gala will provide a platform for local Brisbane children’s authors and illustrators to promote and launch their own work and host national and international literary guests.”

Mr Smith also promised new libraries for Wynnum central and Moorooka at a cost of $5 million each.

“We’ll also undertake major renovations to the Mitchelton and Stones Corner libraries to make sure they’re meeting basic standard levels,” he said.

Mr Smith’s opponent, LNP Lord Mayor Graham Quirk, says his team has a better record when it comes to libraries.

He says he’s invested a record $200 million over the past four years in Brisbane’s libraries, with the construction of two new ones and upgrades to eight.

“In contrast, the number of libraries in Brisbane went backwards under Labor after they shut down essential community services such as libraries, pools and ferry terminals to pay off their spiralling debt at the time,” Mr Quirk said in a statement.
