Organised crime and the Gold Coast’s escalating bikie war will be a major focus of the Queensland government’s cabinet meeting on Monday.
Police Minister Jack Dempsey on Sunday said it was vital that legislation reflected community expectations.
“We’re looking at having the toughest sentences in Australia in relation to illegal firearms,” he told reporters.
“We’ve got to take these guns off our streets and we’ve got to make sure the perpetrators receive the full force of the law.”
The double shooting of a man linked to an outlaw bikie gang and an innocent bystander at a Gold Coast shopping centre on Saturday has reignited debate about measures to deal with gang violence and organised crime.
The offender, believed to be a member of a rival club, remains on the run from police.
