Qld agrees to income management plan

The Queensland government has agreed to a controversial plan to introduce income management in two regional cities.

Child Safety Minister Tracy Davis said she has agreed to participate in a trial of the federal government’s Child Protection Income Management scheme in Logan and Rockhampton.

Ms Davis says families will have to provide consent to take part in the program, where 70 per cent on their income support payments will be managed for them to pay for essentials like food, clothing and housing.

“It won’t reduce the amount of income families receive, it will simply change the way their money is managed and how they receive their welfare payments,” she said in a statement.

“The scheme will provide child safety officers with an additional tool to help families where financial mismanagement has been identified as a risk factor for a child.”

But the scheme, expected to start in August, has been criticised as “draconian”.

Queensland Greens spokeswoman Libby Connors has previously said the “harsh measures” would not be needed if proper child protection policies were introduced at state level.

Bankstown in NSW, Playford in South Australia and Shepparton in Victoria are also planned trial sites.
