nsnbc : The government of Qatar opened a new military office in Washington as the Arab Gulf country tries to bolster military and security ties with the United States.
The Defense Ministry of Qatar, on Monday, inaugurated the office of the country’s new military attache, in the Georgetown neighborhood. The office is located just a few blocks from the Qatari embassy.
The inauguration was attended by military officials from the United States and other countries. Both the Qatari and the U.S.’ national anthem were played. Staff Brig. Gen. Yousef al-Kuwari is the Qatari defense attaché. He says six officers and one non-commissioned officer will be posted to the office, representing Qatar’s army, navy, air force and special forces.
Qatar struggling to cast itself as a reliable U.S. counterterrorism partner amid a Persian Gulf diplomatic crisis after the United States found itself in the middle of a dispute between Qatar and its Guld Cooperation Council partners earlier this year.
Qatar is being internationally criticized for hosting, funding, and otherwise supporting a wide variety of Muslim Brotherhood affiliated and other Islamist organizations and terrorist organizations. Most prominently, the Afghan Taliban’s office in Qatar, fugitive Egyptian Muslim Brothers, multiple Islamist insurgent groups in Syria, including groups like Jabhat al-Nusra (in its various rebranded incarnations) with links to Al-Qaeda.
In 2013 nsnbc international obtained a leaked document from the Qatari embassy in Libya. The document, a letter to the Qatari defense ministry, noted that insurgents trained in Libya now were ready for deployment to Syria via Turkey.
