Pyne has ‘no friends on other side’

Federal Coalition frontbencher Christopher Pyne says he doesn’t have any friends on the other side of politics.

Mr Pyne’s candid confession came during a meal with Howard-era colleague Amanda Vanstone and journalist Annabel Crabb in the latter’s new ABC cooking show, Kitchen Cabinet.

A preview of the show, released on the TV Tonight blog on Thursday, shows Mr Pyne cooking steak.

Ms Vanstone – a former ambassador to Italy – turns it into tagliato, or cut steak on fettuccine.

Mr Pyne also said politics was a zero sum game with no second prize.

Asked if he had friends on the other side of the chamber he said: “No, not really.

“I mean I like some of them, I like some people,” he said.

“But it’s very hard to be friends with people who want to have the same thing that you want.

“It’s hard to be friends with people who are trying to make sure you lose your seat,” the South Australian MP and manager of opposition business said.
