‘Putin to put Russia back on world map’

Regardless of Russians’ focus on their country’s internal affairs, Putin’s triumph in rising to power for a third term will make the state capable of making major decisions that will affect other parts of the world, Omar Nashabi, editor of al-Akhbar Weekly in Beirut said on Sunday.

Putin claimed victory in the country’s presidential elections with nearly 64 percent of the vote, securing a new six-year term in the Kremlin.

He touched upon Moscow’s recent vetoing of a UN Security Council resolution against Syria, saying the drive brought back Russia as “a power and as an important decision maker in international politics.”

“Mr. Putin gives the impression to the Russians that he is a strong leader, that he is capable of facing the challenges- economic challenges or political challenges and also challenges coming from criticism,” he added.

Putin’s previous term in the presidential office ended in 2008 after two consecutive terms as president, because the Russian constitution prevented him from running for a third consecutive term.
