‘Put Greek TV/radio back on air 24/7’

On Saturday, DIMAR spokesman Andreas Papadopoulos said that the party, one of the three members of the ruling coalition, would not agree to a proposal to partially reinstatement of the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (ERT), which is the country’s state-owned public radio and television broadcasting corporation, adding it had to be entirely reinstated.

“We do not agree with this proposal,” Papadopoulos said.

On Friday, Samaras issued a statement, saying, “A temporary committee… can be appointed to hire a small number of (ERT) employees.”

On June 11, the broadcaster’s television and radio stations were suddenly shut down. The move, which is part of the Greek government’s austerity measures, put the ERT’s nearly 2,700 staff members out of work.

The Greek government had previously called ERT a “haven of waste.”

On Saturday, Papadopoulos said, “As soon as ERT reopens, we will agree to setting up a commission to elaborate a restructuring plan on the basis of European audiovisual bodies, which will be proposed over the next two to three months with the aim of reorganizing ERT.”

On Friday, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) called the ERT’s closure “anti-democratic” and “unprofessional.”

In a petition signed by 51 European directors general, the EBU asked the Greek government to reopen ERT.

The EBU, of which Greece is a founding member, has been offering assistance to maintain ERT’s online and satellite broadcasts through its website.

On Thursday, thousands of people gathered in front of the ERT offices in Athens to urge Samaras to repeal the closure.

ERT began broadcasting in 1938. It ran three domestic TV channels, four national radio stations, as well as regional radio stations and an external service called Voice of Greece.

Greece has been in a recession for the past five years. The country has been cutting down its spending over the past four years, which has resulted in many Greeks losing their jobs.

The country has been surviving on bailout loans from its international creditors since May 2010.
