Pursued car crashes into house

The driver of a high-powered sports car being pursued by police lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the house of an 89-year-old woman.

The chase began at 8pm (AEDT) on Wednesday in Altona North, in Melbourne’s west, when police clocked a Mazda RX8 travelling at 122kmh.

As they attempted to intercept the car the driver took evasive action, driving down side streets.

Police called off the pursuit when the vehicle turned into Blackshaws Road and almost hit another car.

A short time later the driver of the Mazda lost control of the car and crashed into a house.

The only occupant, an 89-year-old woman, was not injured.

Firefighters were called to shore-up the house to make it safe.

Police arrested the 36-year-old driver from Altona North who returned a positive preliminary breath test.
