A taxi driver is in a coma with head injuries after being beaten up by a passenger in Woolloomooloo.
Police say the driver picked up a young man on Cowper Wharf Road, Woolloomooloo, in inner suburban Sydney, about 8.30pm on Thursday.
“Shortly after getting in the taxi, it is alleged the man became aggressive and the 55-year-old male taxi driver stopped the vehicle on Forbes Street, where he asked the man to leave the taxi,” police said in a statement.
They said the man got out of the vehicle and then allegedly kicked and spat on it.
“It is further alleged that when the taxi driver got out of the taxi, the man punched him to the face.
The taxi driver fell to the ground unconscious and the man fled the scene.”
Passersby helped the taxi driver, who regained consciousness and drove to Kings Cross Road, Potts Point, where police and ambulance paramedics were called.
He was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital where he remains in an induced coma with head injuries.
Police on Friday arrested a 22-year-old man and charged him with recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm and will appear before Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday.
