Both Labor and the Coalition deny having kept so-called dirt files, but both Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Opposition leader Tony Abbott have admitted at some stage collecting info on their political opponents.
Ms Gillard says it’s fair to scrutinise the activities of opposition MPs after the ABC said ministerial staff had been told to dig up dirt on political opponents by combing the internet, past speeches, the MP interests register and references to their student days.
Opposition Leader Tony Abbott reacted to the news by saying the government was ethically challenged, but himself conceded in a 2007 radio interview, when he was a minister, that his side of politics kept such files.
But both sides say they only use material on the public record.
