Public housing reforms ‘sensible’

A community housing company is pleased with the Queensland Government’s plan to create an increased role for non-government housing providers.

The Housing and Public Works Minister, Bruce Flegg, has unveiled reforms to the government public housing system to ensure it is properly utilised and working as efficiently as possible.

The Coast-to-Bay Housing Group is the largest provider of community housing in the Sunshine Coast, Gympie and Moreton Bay region.

CEO Morrie Evans says the reforms are sensible and accurately reflect the needs of the sector.

“What is very pleasing is to see the Minister’s keenness to get the not-for-profit sector working in partnership with the department more closely than perhaps we’ve worked in the past,” he said.

“We would certainly like to see a regional approach to solving the housing needs for people in need.

“It’s pretty sensible … I think it accurately reflects the issues the Government and the department faces.

“There’s no question that there’s a growing demand for public housing and there’s limited supplies, so there are these issues that need to be addressed.”
