Tel Aviv’s newest sanitation truck needs a name.
The municipality is holding a contest to name its latest garbage truck, a quieter, German-made Faun Rotopress that can hold more refuse and will therefore require fewer trips down Tel Aviv’s narrow streets.
Contestants can enter their pick for the truck’s name on the contest website by March 23, when a panel of judges, including a member of the Academy of Hebrew Language, will choose their favorite.
The contest winner will win a vacation night in a Tel Aviv hotel during the intermediate days of Passover, a ride on the truck and other more standard Tel Avivian tourist delights.
The truck, considered a highly economic refuse collection vehicle, has lower operating costs because it can empty all sizes of garbage containers and collect organic waste as well, according to the Faun website.
Tel Aviv’s Rotopress will collect some 40,000 tons of garbage before and during Passover, a period of the year that’s known for its high volume of waste and debris.
Finding a new name for the city’s latest acquisition is an age-old tradition in Tel Aviv, said Mayor Ron Huldai.
The city’s first mayor, Meir Dizengoff, would often turn to national poet Hayim Nahman Bialik when he needed new Hebrew names and words for the nascent city’s works.
