Pro-far-right in UK back armed conflict

The study, entitled “From Voting to Violence? Rightwing Extremists in Modern Britain,” showed that many of the country’s extreme right supporters, including 40% of the British National Party (BNP) members, backed armed conflict against ethnic and religious minorities.

The report also revealed that a “hostile inner core” is apparently preparing for active conflict.

Matthew Goodwin, of the University of Nottingham, and Jocelyn Evans, of Salford University, authors of the report, said the results took the lid off the potential threat from far-right extremists faced by the British society.

“What we have got here is a group of people who self-identify as supporters of the far right and who are, to quite a large extent, backing ideas about preparing for violence and appear to view violence as a justifiable political strategy,” said Goodwin.

The report comes as Norwegian mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik, the right wing extremist who has confessed to slaying 77 people, was charged with terrorism.

The anti-Islam Norwegian man killed 77 people in a bomb and gun attack in the Norwegian capital Oslo and a nearby island last year.

Just one hour before committing the massacre, Breivik emailed leaders of right wing extremists in the UK saying Europe would be “overwhelmed by Islam.”

The authors of the report, which was based on a YouGov survey of members of the BNP, the UK Independence Party, and English Defence League (EDL), said Breivik “essentially offered a brand to would-be perpetrators of far right violence.”
