Crown Princess Mary of Denmark has found herself in the company of Barack Obama after unveiling a new portrait of herself by an artist who famously captured the US president.
The portrayal of Princess Mary by Danish-born artist Gugger Petter will hang alongside the portrait of President Obama which adorned his campaign headquarters in Chicago.
The Australian crown princess has unveiled her portrait at the Museum of National History at Frederiksborg Castle north of Copenhagen.
The work displays the artist’s trademark use of newspapers to compose the image, and Ms Petter used The Australian as well as several Danish publications to capture the Princess Mary.
The Obama portrait, commissioned in 2007 and made from four Sunday editions of the Chicago Tribune, has taken on legendary status after being widely photographed by the international media.
It hung at campaign headquarters until President Obama was elected in November 2008.
“Not only do the portraits represent a high level of technical skill, they also serve as a kind of historical documentation,” Museum of National History director Mette Skougaard told AAP.
The portraits will hang side by side at the museum until August 31.
