PRESSURE is mounting on Gaming Minister George Souris to resign over The Star casino scandal after he told New South Wales Parliament he would not reveal discussions with dumped premier’s communications director Peter Grimshaw because they were “private”.

But Mr Souris admitted he agreed to a request from Mr Grimshaw on February 2 to withhold from the Premier that Mr Grimshaw’s girlfriend was one of two sexual harassment complainants at The Star.

The request to withhold information came on the day Star boss Sid Vaikunta was sacked over the scandal.

It was 13 days later that the Premier discovered Mr Grimshaw’s partner was involved.

A February 2 text message, revealed in The Daily Telegraph said: “Don’t worry I’ve told Barry about Sid but not mentioned (Miss M) . . . You’ve been a friend for years and were supportive of me last year and you will never lose my loyalty. G.”

Mr Souris was asked in Parliament yesterday what “support” he had received from Mr Grimshaw which was so great that he owed him more than the Premier.

The Minister said he did not have to tell the Premier because the conversation occurred in a “private capacity”.

Opposition Leader John Robertson said yesterday it was clear Mr Souris owed a “serious debt” to Mr Grimshaw and this compromised his position as a minister: “That debt he feels that he owes Peter Grimshaw is influencing how he (runs) his portfolio.”

Asked whether he had ever discussed whether the casino should keep its licence with Mr Grimshaw, Mr Souris declined to answer.
