Lord Prescott is considering a return to frontline politics as one of the country’s first police commissioners.
The role would give the former deputy prime minister control over police strategy and spending across a constabulary.
He must throw his hat in the ring within weeks if he wants to join the ranks of politicians on the ballot cards in November.

Lord Prescott, 73, is most likely to enter the contest in his native Humberside, where he will meet a stiff challenge for the Labour Party nomination.
A retired chief superintendent, former MP and ex-chairman of the local police authority have already said they are looking to stand on a party ticket.
Lord Prescott is arguably the best-known face to emerge as a potential candidate for the role, which commands a salary of up to £100,000.
Others who have announced interest include retired Army officer Colonel Tim Collins in Kent and former police chief Tim Brain in Gloucestershire.
Lord Prescott said he grew concerned about police accountability after becoming embroiled in the phone-hacking scandal.
He added: ‘What we are seeing on the horizon is a new framework of accountability, a way of making the police more answerable to the public.

‘It’s an interesting time for a man like me. Those who are looking to continue public service might think: this is something I can do.’
He added: ‘The commissioners are going to be people who have some influence and I can’t help but feel the personalities of the individuals will be important. Given it’s an election that many of the electorate don’t think is important, being known may be a plus.’
Last night Lord Prescott refused to confirm he would stand, saying on Twitter he had yet to make up his mind.
But in a light-hearted reference to Kojak, the U.S. television detective played by Telly Savalas, he said he was ‘stocking up on lollipops’, adding the character’s catchphrase ‘who loves ya baby’.
The creation of police commissioners is a flagship Tory policy which will fundamentally change the way police operate.
Elected commissioners will be able to hire and fire top officers.

NO Prescott…you can`t compare yourself in any way to Telly Savalas, he was a ‘competent’ person in his role as Kojak!
I think that if Prescott grows a moustache he`d be more like Lucky Grills who played the role of Detective ‘Bluey Hills’… the overweight, frequently incapable, incompetent buffoon.

Morally bankrupt, fat, aggressive lying berk. He would never pass a police fitness or suitability test so should not even be considered……should never be allowed to dictate to anyone if he is unable to do their job himself.
