Premier proud on his one year anniversary

“Whether it is in dairy, whether it is in agriculture or whether it is food and beverages – and we specifically addressed these issues in China – I have no doubt Bendigo is going to play a role in that.”

Education, health, agriculture and professional services were among the sectors the premier said Bendigo should capitalise on to create more jobs. He said enhancing lifestyle opportunities would also help to lure people to the central Victorian city.

“There needs to be essential infrastructure and the hospital will obviously be part of that,” Mr Baillieu said.

“Upgrades to the secondary college will also be part of that (as will) having the arts precinct upgraded.

“The Bendigo gallery has already established an extraordinary reputation, it is now a worldwide reputation.

“I had the opportunity myself this week of launching the Grace Kelly: Style Icon exhibition, which will commence in March next year… and that (will) draw people to Bendigo (to come) and see a world-class exhibition in a very high-quality gallery with fantastic staff.

“That is the sort of thing that draws people to any city.

“It is why Melbourne has been so successful and why Bendigo will continue to be.”

Bendigo will have a new state-of-art hospital come 2016.

The development will be among the biggest regional Victoria has witnessed and offer the city a boost in professionals relocating to Bendigo.

Mr Baillieu said he was optimistic construction of project would start on time late next year.

He said the Coalition’s $630 million hospital pledge and other election commitments remained on track.

“We are really looking to getting some work happening on the ground with (the hospital),” Mr Baillieu said.

“We have obviously made significant commitments around the arts precinct, around the airport and our commitments, what we made before the election, we are working through (them).

“They were modest, they were responsible and that is what we are doing.”

While buoyant about the development, Mr Baillieu was reserved when it came to a review of pathology services at Bendigo Health.

Hospital officials have called for tenders to outsource the service but are yet to rule out keeping the service in-house.

“There are a range of issues but that is very much for the hospital board to take the lead on,” Mr Baillieu said.

“We have faith in the hospital board and look forward to what they produce.”
