The State Opposition has again accused the Premier of backing away from his election promise over power price rises.
In the lead up to last month’s poll, Colin Barnett promised to keep power price rises at or around the rate of inflation.
Earlier this month, he said there would not be any major increases as long as the State Government maintains strong budget surpluses.
Asked about the issue in parliament during question time today, Mr Barnett had a slightly different answer.
“What I said during the election campaign is that we would tackle the cost structure of electricity,” he said.
The Premier did not reaffirm his pledge but said the proposed merger of Verve and Synergy is part of his plans to tackle the cost structure of electricity.
The Labor leader Mark McGowan says Mr Barnett needs to make his intentions clear.
“He needs to come clean on what his plans are,” he said.
“He’s trying to get out of a solemn promise that he made before the last election and he needs to be held to account on that.
“He needs to be honest with the people of Western Australia now about what he has in store for price rises for electricity.”
A spokeswoman for the Premier insists his position has not changed.
