Queenslanders can now switch power companies without copping exit fees as the government tries to shore up an election pledge to tackle cost of living pressures.
Parliament has passed laws allowing consumers to terminate their contracts without incurring exit fees if their retailer is charging more than the regulated price.
The change came after some power companies ignored a government freeze on the tariff for domestic customers.
Energy Minister Mark McArdle says Queenslanders now have the freedom to abandon bad deals with retailers, without being penalised.
But the opposition says the new laws are a smokescreen, sparked by the fact the government suddenly realised its tariff freeze had failed miserably.
