Portugal faces surge in gas prices

Official figures indicated a 12-percent rise in gas price in the crisis-hit European state following January 2012.

“Gasoline was 75 cents a litter five years ago and now it costs 1 euro 70 cents… I needed 40 euros back then to fill up my car’s tank and now I need around 80 euros ,” a Portuguese driver told Press TV on Sunday.

Europe plunged into deep financial crisis in 2008 and the situation has continued to intensify in recent months.

Portugal has been under financial support from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund, and has to show its full commitment to the bailout plan to the lenders.

The government has unveiled a harsh package of measures to control the country’s budget deficit in 2012 and 2013. The measures have sparked many nationwide strikes in Portugal.
