Tasmania’s Legislative Council Select Committee has heard the importation of raw poppy material would be a game changer for the state’s industry.
The Committee is inquiring into the State Government’s decision last year to allow Australian company T-P-I Enterprises to import 2,000 tonnes of raw poppy material from Turkey.
Peter Patmore, from the Poppy Control and Advisory Committee has told the public hearing in Hobart the poppy industry has traditionally worked on a “Tasmania-first” basis.
He says that would change if importation is allowed.
The public hearing has closed its doors to the media for the rest of Mr Patmore’s evidence.
