Poll shows Hollande maintains popularity

According to a poll conducted by the BVA institute for L’Express Magazine, Hollande’s popularity rate has reached 61 percent, only two weeks after taking office.

“He has lowered his salary and that of his ministers by 30 percent. He has been applauded by his former voters for having perfect gender parity in his cabinet. He is nearly finished with his plan to tax millionaires at 75 percent. So, he has already enacted many of his popular campaign promises,” political analyst Pierre-Etienne Bouchet said.

New regulations will also prevent the CEOs of France’s state-owned companies from receiving salaries more than 20 times of the salary of the lowest-paid workers.

Figures released earlier this week show that April was the twelfth consecutive month that France witnessed a growth in its unemployment rate.

In his election campaign, Hollande promised to create thousands of state sector jobs and to lighten up the country’s austerity measures.

Europe was hit by a serious financial crisis in 2008 and the situation has intensified over the past few months.
