A police officer had sex with a prostitute while on duty in return for not arresting her, a court has heard.

PC Jasbir Dhanda, 52, is alleged to have regularly turned up at the woman’s house in uniform, and demanded sex in return for not executing a warrant on her.

Dhanda, who worked for Derbyshire Police, also told the 33-year-old woman to buy him crack cocaine and smoked it with her, Nottingham Crown Court heard.

It is claimed that Dhanda targeted two other vulnerable women, one a crime victim, by using a police computer to access their details.

He denies misconduct in public office and misusing the police database.

Prosecutor Neil Moore told a jury that Dhanda trawled police databases for vulnerable women to exploit over a period of seven years.

He had targeted women who were ‘vulnerable, capable of being taken advantage of, or exploited,’ Mr Moore said.

The prosecutor claimed that Dhanda thought the women’s difficulties made it more likely they would agree to sex, and less likely that they would report him – or be taken seriously if they did.

Mr Moore said Dhanda met the first victim, who was working as a prostitute, in 2000, when he was an officer in Derby.

He said Dhanda’s criminality began in 2003 when, while on duty one night, he asked the woman to get into his car, telling her there was a warrant out for her arrest but that he would not execute it.

The woman, who was addicted to heroin and crack cocaine, told police that Dhanda had then asked her to get him some drugs.

She told officers: ‘He said something like ‘score for me and be a good girl and you’ll be all right’.’

Mr Moore said: ‘She bought the drugs and he offered that they would smoke it together and they shared a crack pipe together.

‘Afterwards, he said he wanted sex in return for giving her crack cocaine and not arresting her. She didn’t want to be arrested and so she did.’

The court heard that he met another prostitute after she complained to the police about an incident involving her former partner.

Mr Moore said Dhanda went round to her house the day after the incident ‘to update her’.

He told the jury that Dhanda had then pulled down his trousers and performed a sex act on himself before telling her: ‘Look what you’re doing to me. I like you. I fancy you.’

He then kissed her and touched her sexually before asking for her phone number, said Mr Moore.

‘From that moment, the defendant kept calling her all the time and saying he was coming round for sex. He was always on duty, in uniform, sometimes three times a week.’

Two years later, Dhanda turned up out of the blue at another address where the woman lived and told her: ‘At last, I’ve found you’, said Mr Moore.

Dhanda is accused of finding the woman’s address by accessing the Guardian police database for his personal use.

He is also accused of using Guardian to check personal information on three other women, and to discover the address of a woman he knew socially.

The woman told police she had been surprised when he turned up at her home and when she questioned how Dhanda knew her address, he said: ‘Oh, I just found it out.’

The trial continues.
