NSW police are concerned about the number of recent dangerous driving incidents involving children.
Last week a five-year-old girl died in a crash on the NSW far north coast and on Thursday a child was found in the car of a woman who allegedly returned a high-range breath analysis.
In the past week, NSW police have issued 604 traffic infringement notices for offences related to unrestrained children in vehicles.
“This is 98 more infringements than those issued in the same period last year,” Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Assistant Commissioner John Hartley said on Friday.
Police arrested a 33-year-old woman last night at South West Rocks, on the NSW mid-north coast, after they stopped her for a random breath test.
The woman, whose three-year-old daughter was in the car, allegedly returned a reading of 0.220.
She was charged with a high-range PCA offence and is due to appear in Kempsey Local Court on February 2.
“I find it incomprehensible that a parent would consider speeding or drinking and driving with their child in the car,” Assistant Commissioner Hartley said.
“Leaving your baby or toddler unrestrained in a vehicle also puts them at an unacceptable risk.”
Meanwhile, an 82-year-old man on a scooter has been charged after being stopped on Parramatta Road, at Flemington, on Thursday.
A check of the man’s licence revealed it was suspended until 2025, police said.
He was charged with driving while disqualified, not wearing a helmet and using an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle.
He is due to appear at Burwood Local Court on January 17.
