Police to review Milne rape allegations

Police may revisit the 2004 rape allegations against St Kilda star Stephen Milne after an Office of Police Integrity (OPI) report recommended that police review the brief.

The Herald Sun says the OPI told Victoria Police to make sure all the evidence in the case was properly prepared, recorded and kept by the force.

Milne, who reached his 500-goal milestone last weekend, has consistently protested his innocence.

The alleged victim, then a 19 year-old student, claimed to police that she thought she was being intimate with Milne’s teammate Leigh Montagna in a darkened bedroom in his Highett home after celebrations for St Kilda’s family day.

When a door opened bringing light into the room she allegedly saw it was Milne and ran screaming from the bed.

The Herald Sun said OPI investigators started probing the case again in mid-2010, after claims police tried to derail the original rape investigation into Milne.

Detectives involved in the investigation claimed a potential rape charge against Milne collapsed amid threats and intimidation from inside Victoria Police and by powerful backers of the St Kilda club.

Milne admitted digital penetration of the alleged victim, but denied intercourse took place.
