Police search for missing girl’s remains

Police are excavating an isolated area in the NSW central west in their search for the remains of a teenager who disappeared while hitchhiking home from a games arcade 15 years ago.

Fifteen-year-old Jessica Small was last seen in Bathurst about 12.35am on October 26, 1997.

Jessica and a friend were attempting to hitchhike home from the Amuse Me Games Arcade when they got into a white VK or VL Holden Commodore sedan.

When the male driver allegedly tried to assault them in the car, Jessica’s friend managed to escape and alert nearby residents.

Jessica hasn’t been seen or heard from since. Police believe she was murdered.

They have new information that a car similar to the one Jessica was abducted in was seen in a riverside area at O’Connell, about halfway between Bathurst and Oberon.

Homicide Squad detectives, local police, the AFP and the dog squad were excavating an isolated area near the Fish River on Monday.

The operation is expected to take two days.

Police are still seeking information about a mill worker who was at the Amuse Me centre on the night Jessica disappeared.

They would also like to hear from a witness who told police about a former workmate in the Bathurst area who owned and then disposed of a white Holden Commodore.
