Police say five shot dead in Iraq

An off-duty policeman was shot dead near his house near the town of Khalis, 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of the capital Baghdad, on Thursday.

In another incident, gunmen used silenced weapons against a police patrol in the Doura district in southern Baghdad, killing two policemen.

A police lieutenant colonel and his driver were also killed in a village near the city of Tikrit, 150 kilometers (95 miles) north of Baghdad.

Bombing attacks and shootings have been intensified in Iraq since the beginning of the year.

Meanwhile, Supreme Judicial Council said that fugitive Iraqi Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi and his employees were behind years of deadly terror operations against security officials and civilians in the country.

Hashemi has denied the charges and refused to stand trial in Baghdad.
