Emergency service workers have renewed calls for compulsory 3am closing times and 1.30am lock-outs to help curb violence in Sydney’s Kings Cross nightclub district.
The Last Drinks coalition, a group of union-led police, doctors and nurses, says the measures have helped reduce late-night violence since being introduced in Newcastle.
“We know what works – a suite of simple measures like reduced trading hours and lock-outs,” Police Association of NSW president Scott Weber said.
“The government needs to take a good look at the statistics and take some serious steps.”
The Last Drinks coalition also wants restrictions on the sale of high-alcohol content drinks, such as shots, after 10pm.
The call comes in response to the death of 18-year-old Thomas Kelly, who was king hit on the notorious Sydney strip earlier this month.
Hospitality Minster George Souris has announced that every bar and club in Kings cross is being audited to try and stamp out anti-social behaviour.
He was speaking on Tuesday night at a community forum arranged to address concern about alcohol-fuelled violence.
“This evening at 6pm a major operation has been commenced by the office of liquor and gaming and including the police to undertake an inspection audit and a compliance audit of every licensed venue in Kings Cross,” Mr Souris said.
Local federal MP Malcolm Turnbull also addressed the forum, saying he didn’t believe Kings Cross was safe on weekends.
“I’m concerned for every person that goes there,” he added.
