Police link drug gang to Sydney shootings

Police say they have smashed a drug syndicate allegedly run by Middle Eastern criminals linked to a string of shootings in Sydney’s west.

The Assyrian gang is accused of selling drugs in the Sydney metropolitan region, and is being investigated for selling and using firearms.

“This is a significant criminal group who are involved in a number of criminal enterprises, including firearms, and we believe firearm-related offences,” Assistant Commissioner Frank Mennilli told reporters in Sydney on Wednesday.

“We believe that they have been involved in some of the firearm offences in this area.”

Sydney’s west and southwest have been plagued by shootings in recent months, with police warning it was only a matter of time before an innocent bystander was killed or injured.

Police stormed four Fairfield homes before 7am (AEDT) on Wednesday and took three men, aged 18, 19 and 20, into custody.

A fourth member of the alleged syndicate, an 18-year-old man, was also arrested overnight.

“We have effectively dismantled an organised crime group,” Mr Mennilli said.

“With a total of seven arrests over the last month we have effectively ripped the heart out of a syndicate of organised criminals.”

The arrests were made as part of Operation Face, formed last July to investigate the street supply of methamphetamine and cannabis by the criminal group.

It subsequently teamed up with officers from Operation Spartan, which was working on the recent spate of shootings across Sydney.

They combined taskforce allegedly netted the syndicate’s 21-year-old kingpin during a raid at a Fairfield home last month and uncovered nine firearms, ammunition and a quantity of drugs.

“We have seized nine firearms, so we do believe that they would have been involved,” Mr Mennilli told AAP on Wednesday.

“We do believe there will be further charges in the future.”

The four men arrested on Wednesday were expected to be charged later in the day with more than 20 offences, including drug supply and participating in a criminal group.

Two other men, aged 19 and 20, were in custody on unrelated matters and were expected to be charged in the near future, police said.

Police later said they arrested another man related to the gang at 1.15 pm (AEDT) on Wednesday.

He was charged with supplying prohibited drugs, being on a drug premises and participating in a criminal group.

He was refused bail and would appear in Fairfield Local Court on Thursday, police said.
