A killer who brutally attacked a pensioner in his own home and left his body in a bedroom is being hunted by police.

Detectives launched a murder investigation after the injured body of Winston Fernandez was found fully clothed in a bedroom at the front of the house.

A post-mortem examination confirmed the 69-year-old, who lived alone, died of multiple injuries, although police refused to confirm if he had been stabbed or beaten.

His house in Epsom, Surrey, remained cordoned off after police the shocking discovery on Friday.

Officers were alerted when a worried friend raised the alarm after he was unable to contact Mr Fernandez on Monday.

Superintendent Alan Sharp of Surrey Police, said that Mr Fernandez had been a well known figure in his home town.

Officers were still hunting the person behind the horrific crime.

‘Although formal identification of the body has not yet taken place, we strongly believe the man is Mr Fernandez who had lived in the area for some time and is well known to local people,’ he said.

‘We are keen to speak with anyone who has had contact with Mr Fernandez this year and are appealing to anyone who can help establish the circumstances surrounding his death to contact officers as a matter of urgency.’

Epsom and Ewell Neighbourhood Commander Inspector Craig Knight added: ‘We will be increasing patrols in the area and speaking with local people to address any concerns which they may have surrounding the incident.

‘I would like to reassure residents that incidents such as this are very rare in Surrey and we are doing all we can to find those responsible and bring them to justice.”

Mr Fernandez’s family has been informed of his tragic death and the coroner for Surrey has been notified.
