Police in hunt for known Victorian sex offender arrest man in Queensland

A VICTORIAN sex offender who was the subject of a major police manhunt has been found in Queensland.

Police arrested the 58-year-old man near Ingham, in north Queensland, this afternoon.

The arrest follows the disappearance of the known sex offender, who had not been seen since leaving his Melton home last Friday morning.

The man was under a court-ordered curfew prohibiting him from being away from home after 11pm and a monitoring device attached to his ankle alerted authorities he had not returned home that night.

When it was found he had disappeared, Corrections Victoria officials contacted police who spent Saturday trying to find him.

It was about 36 hours from the time the man was noticed missing to police going public with the news yesterday.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Neil Paterson said the man was released from prison in March last year.

Corrections Victoria Commissioner Bob Hastings said there had been five people disappear while on such orders since they were introduced in 2005.

“I think that’s a fairly good track record,” he said.

Mr Hastings said earlier it was not known whether the man – who had a long history of vicious attacks on women – had removed his tracking anklet.
