Police head to NT train derailment

A freight train has derailed in the Northern Territory.

The iron ore train left the tracks just north of Edith Falls River Crossing, near Katherine, about 5.30am (CST) on Tuesday.

One of the drivers suffered a back injury, police said.

Police and emergency services are trying to reach the derailment.

Commander David Proctor said police were using a helicopter to get officers and medical staff to the scene.

“Police believe the train has about 20 carriages and the incident has led to a complete derailment,” he said in a statement.

“We need to ensure the scene is safe before investigations can begin into how the freight train came off the tracks.”
