“At present, the death toll in this train catastrophe has risen to 14,” said Cichocki, speaking at the crash site as rescue operations were underway overnight .
The accident occurred on Saturday night when a train en route to the southern city of Krakow collided with another train which was travelling on the same track to the capital Waraw from the southeastern city of Przemysl.
“About fifty people have been injured,” according to local police.
About 450 firefighters and 100 police officers are involved in the rescue operation. The firefighters say the “rescue is difficult and complicated.”
Poland’s transport minister says the catastrophic accident is one of the nation’s worst railway accidents in years.
