Australian troops will be coming home from Afghanistan a year earlier than planned, Prime Minister Julia Gillard will announce on Tuesday.
News Ltd newspapers said our soldiers will start leaving the war-torn country halfway through next year, and most will be home by early 2014, almost a year ahead of schedule.
The move comes after almost 12 years of war and the loss of 32 Diggers.
News Ltd said Ms Gillard will make the dramatic announcement in a speech to the Australian Strategic Policy Institute in Canberra.
It said with an election to be held before the end of next year and with 60 per cent of voters against the war, the timing of the withdrawal will have maximum political impact.
