PM Gillard defends skills brochure

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has defended spending taxpayers’ money on a colour brochure to promote her new skills policy.

About a third of the 84-page Skills for all Australians booklet includes either blank or full-page photographs with no information on the policy.

While the cost of it has yet to be revealed, Ms Gillard told reporters in Canberra the booklet was justified.

“I think people are entitled to know what we are aiming for, for the skills of the nation,” she said.

“We are talking about what will give people access to better jobs, higher incomes and more security over their working lives.

“Australians are entitled to the full details of Labor’s vision for the future.”

Ms Gillard said the information would become important in the lead-up to April’s Council of Australian Governments meeting at which she will present the $1.75 billion package to state and territory leaders.

“As we move towards the COAG meeting I do want Australians – individuals and businesses as well as state premiers and territory chief ministers – to understand what is on offer here,” she said.

Costings are being sought from the prime minister’s office.
