PM discusses Malvinas with Chile govt.

David Cameron gave Sebastian Pinera a surprise phone call on Tuesday to discuss different issues including the sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands (also known as Falklands.)

The war rhetoric between London and Buenos Aires over the oil-rich islands has heightened as the 30th anniversary of the Malvinas war approaches. Last week, Argentina filed a complaint at the United Nations against Britain for militarizing the dispute over the islands.

Moreover, the Argentine government, seeking to throw regional influence behind the issue, has also raised the possibility of blocking the only air route from Chile’s Punto Arenas to the islands.

Cameron reportedly used the opportunity to once again emphasize the right of the islanders to self-determination and their preference to continue belonging to Britain.

However, Pinera, formerly announced Chili would join the South American nations in denying entry to its ports to Falklands-flagged vessels, said that the Chilean nationals have always backed Argentina’s claim over the islands.

Referring to Britain’s constant military threat against Argentina, Pinera stressed that the two nations should resolve the dispute through peaceful negotiations.

UK PM’s appalling phone call to the Chilean President’s summer residence came only days after more nations in Latin America and the Caribbean threw their weight behind Argentina’s sovereignty claim.

Earlier this month Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez stressed that if British Empire launches war over the islands, Argentina will not be alone. Saying, “Venezuela is no power, but we’ve got some weapons and the will to face any imperialist aggression.”

Ecuador President Rafael Correa also said that it was time for Latin America to consider sanctions against the “mistaken power” that acting as imperialist and colonialist in the 21st century.
