PM disability deadline ‘political’: NSW

NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell has accused Prime Minister Julia Gillard of imposing a political deadline on trial sites for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Coalition governments in NSW and Victoria have refused to set aside funds to set up trials for the scheme, beginning in July 2013.

Speaking after COAG talks in Canberra on Wednesday, Mr O’Farrell said Ms Gillard was more concerned with having something to campaign on ahead of the 2013 federal election than actually setting up a NDIS as recommended by the Productivity Commission.

“Yesterday’s deadline was a political agenda, the deadline imposed by the prime minister who’s focused on the next election, not the end of the trial period,” the premier told ABC Radio on Thursday.

Mr O’Farrell is refusing to contribute $70 million over four years for an NDIS trial.

Canberra wants the NSW government to contribute the funds to set up a trial for 10,000 people with disabilities in the state’s Hunter region.

But Mr O’Farrell said Ms Gillard had not given the states adequate time to assess funding arrangements.

A spokesman for NSW Minister for Disability Services Andrew Constance said the minister was meeting with his Victorian counterpart in Melbourne on Thursday afternoon to determine a way forward.

The spokesman said they were still hopeful of meeting with the federal government later in the afternoon.

Only the Labor jurisdictions of South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT have agreed to provide funding for NDIS trials.
