One of Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s key backers, Bill Shorten, says he will support her resolving the federal Labor leadership tension with Kevin Rudd in whatever way she sees fit.
Ms Gillard’s office is denying media reports that she has decided to call a leadership ballot next Tuesday and is considering sacking the foreign minister.
Workplace Relations Minister Bill Shorten said the leadership speculation was damaging and he would support Ms Gillard in any action she might take to bring it to an end.
“What I believe to be the case is the prime minister has the authority and the support to make decisions to end the leadership speculation and the caucus will support her timing and her calls,” he told reporters in Melbourne on Wednesday afternoon.
Mr Shorten earlier said the “vast majority” of the government supported Ms Gillard’s leadership.
“I support the prime minister,” Mr Shorten told reporters.
“It’s up to her how she deals with the leadership speculation.
“It’s certainly distracting the party, but having said that, there’s a lot which we’re getting on with.
“The vast majority of the government support her leadership.”
