Plane crash probe to reopen after 60 years

AN inquest into a fatal plane crash more than 60 years ago will be reopened to consider new evidence.

Three children were killed and 14 people were seriously injured when an Royal Australian Air Force plane crashed onto a crowded Queensland beach in 1950.

The Wirraway plane had been patrolling for sharks before it went down in a crowded area in front of the Maroochydore Surf Club.

Liam O’Connor, Pauline Probert and Graham Blair were killed on the beach.

Queensland Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie said Liam’s brother Brian O’Connor had recently asked him to reopen the inquest and consider evidence he’d uncovered.

Mr O’Connor has concerns about the original 1951 inquest and has compiled a full report on the accident, Mr Bleijie said.

The attorney-general has asked the Queensland coroner to examine the new evidence, saying a new inquest could answer lingering questions.
