Philippines earthquake injures eight

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said that the tremor took place at 7:06 a.m. local time on Tuesday (2360 GMT on Monday), and the epicenter was traced near Masbate City – located about 350 kilometers (217 miles) south of the capital, Manila.

Masbate mayor Socrates Tuason said on national radio that eight people were reported with minor injuries after being hit by falling debris.

“There was panic; people were scared to go out. People were having breakfast and preparing to go to work and school when the quake happened,” he said.

Tuason added that cracks appeared in some buildings of the city, and many residents had been told to stay home for the day.

“There was an old three-story building that collapsed, but engineers had already condemned it long before the quake,” he said, adding that there was no one inside the structure when it crumbled.

Tuason said classes in all schools were suspended in the aftermath of the moderate earthquake.

The Philippines sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, which is an area with intense seismic and volcanic activity caused by friction between shifting tectonic plates.

Ten people were injured last November when a moderate 5.0-magnitude earthquake shook a city in the southern Philippines.
