nsnbc : Rodrigo Duerte, the Philippine President Elect promised that he would aggressively promote birth control in the country even at the risk of a head-on confrontation with the Catholic Church which he denounced as hypocritical.
The Roman Catholic Church is vehemently opposed to artificial birth control. The church is one of the most powerful, if not the most powerful non-governmental organizations in the predominantly Catholic country.
Rodrigo Duerte, who is to be sworn into office on Thursday, said that having many children is one of the main drivers of poverty in the Philippines. He said that he would support at a policy that aims reducing the number of children to three at most.
Duerte, who is known for his non-compliance with the dictates of political correctness had frequently be denounced for his “profanity”, also when it comes to the Catholic Church and its “medieval position” with regard to birth control.
Duerte jokingly said he would chop the penises off of males who were non-compliant with regard to family planning programs. A provocation aimed at the Catholic Church that bans the use of condoms and contraceptives while having invested money in the condom industry.
On a more serious note, Rodrigo Duerte stressed that his new administration would aim at long-term family planning programs. In Davao city, for example, he offered cash rewards to villagers who volunteer to undergo free vasectomy or ligation and to doctors who perform the procedures.
It is believed that Duerte’s project in Davao city will serve as a pilot project to gain data that can eventually be used for establishing a nationwide initiative. Last month Duerte blasted the Catholic Church in the Philippines as “the most hypocritical institution” in the country while he accused some of its bishops of asking for favors from politicians.
