Philippine police arrests S. Korean hackers

Eight South Koreans have been arrested in the Philippines for allegedly hacking into Globe Telecom, one of the country’s largest telcos, in order to lower the cost of international mobile phone calls for other countrymen there.

Philippine police cybercrime division chief Gilbert Sosa said the hackers were rounded up Monday in four raids around metropolitan Manila, along with seven Filipino women working for them, according to the Associated Press on Tuesday.

The group allegedly hacked lines for international calls of Globe Telecom and rerouted them to mostly South Koreans users living in the Philippines, said Sosa in the article. This allowed them to be charged less than half the normal call rates of 11 to 15 cents per minute.

The news follows the arrests last week of another South Korean who allegedly hacked into the international gateway of Smart Communications, it noted. Within the past week, two men in South Korea were also arrested for allegedly stealing the personal data of 8.7 million phone users from South Korean telco KT Corp.
