Phase one of Kings Cross audit done

The first stage of an audit of Kings Cross is complete, but the NSW government doesn’t know when the information will be available to help stamp out violence in the nightclub district.

NSW Hospitality Minister George Souris announced the audit earlier this month in response to the death of Thomas Kelly, 18, who was king hit while walking along the notorious strip of pubs and clubs in Sydney’s inner east.

Auditors visited licensed premises in the Cross last week to inspect incident registers and cross check them with CCTV footage from inside the venues.

On Wednesday, Mr Souris said the first part of the audit had finished but said he could not put a timeline on how long it would take to complete its “second phase”.

“The audit has concluded in terms of the inspection of registers and gathering of incident registers and the performance of responsible service of alcohol,” he told reporters in Sydney on Wednesday.

“The second phase of the audit is to compare that factual information with police records and with CCTV footage.

“I don’t know how long that will take but it’s not going to take forever.”

Mr Souris said any failures to report incidents identified by the audit would be considered by the Office of Liquor and Gaming.

He said if significant breaches were found further regulatory conditions including trading hour restrictions on individual venues could be imposed.
