“Since the distant past, the hegemonic and arrogant powers have sought to dominate the region and found the way to do this is to create insecurity [in the region] and provoke hostility between the nations,” Ahmadinejad said on Sunday, which is considered Persian Gulf Day in Iran.
The Iranian president said the arrogant powers have set up their military forces and bases in the region not for humane and altruistic objectives, but for their “material interests and amassing the wealth of others.”
While historical documents show that the body of water in the south of Iran has always been referred to as the “Persian Gulf,” certain Arab states have mounted efforts to remove “Persian” from the name of the waterway.
Iran’s designation of the national Persian Gulf Day aims to highlight the fact that the waterway has been referred to by historians and ancient texts as “Persian” since the Achaemenid Empire was established in what is now modern day Iran.
