‘PG Arab states abuse Iran leniency’

“I believe that the lenience in Iran’s foreign policy has been abused to the maximum by [Persian Gulf] Arab states. They feel they can take advantage of Iran’s dispute with the West,” Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh said Monday.

The lawmaker, who is a member of the Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said Arab states in the Persian Gulf region have always exploited the tensions between Iran and the West.

“Right now, after Iran’s negotiations with the P5+1 – the US, Britain, China, Russia, and France plus Germany – they have renewed their claims to the Abu Musa [island],” he added.

On April 11, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad visited the Iranian Island of Abu Musa in the Persian Gulf. Following the visit, the UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan criticized the visit as a “violation of UAE sovereignty over its territories.”

“The message which must be conveyed now is that although Iranians may have differences on various issues, they have no disagreements when it comes to the territorial integrity of their country and will defend their rights wholeheartedly,” the lawmaker said.

Falahatpisheh noted that whenever the possibility of negotiations between Iran and the US or Europe is raised, these [Persian Gulf Arab] countries immediately highlight a dispute in order to isolate Iran.

“I believe this policy of isolating of Iran is firstly pursued by the reactionary Arabs followed by the Western countries,” he said.

The islands of the Greater Tunb, the Lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa have been historically part of Iran, proof of which can be found and corroborated by countless historical, legal, and geographical documents in Iran and other parts of the world.

However, the United Arab Emirates has repeatedly laid baseless claims to the islands.
