Petition Drive Starts Wednesday to Legalize Marijuana in Michigan

After a few weeks spent organizing their plans and volunteers, a Michigan advocacy group is planning to launch a petition drive Wednesday aimed at legalizing marijuana for all those 21 and older, according to the Detroit News. The drive is focusing its efforts on getting enough signatures to put the issue on the November ballot.

Here are some of the key details about the petition drive to put the issue of legalization of marijuana in front of Michigan voters.

* The petition drive needs approximately 322,000 valid signatures to put the issue on the November ballot.

* Organization for the drive began on Dec. 29 in Ann Arbor, according to WWMT.

* The petition drive, if successful, is calling for an amendment to the state’s constitution that would make marijuana legal for anyone 21 and older to possess, sell and smoke.

* According to a report by WWJ, support for legalization has increased following ongoing problems with the state’s medical marijuana laws, which were passed in 2008.

* The collection of signatures is due to start in earnest on Wednesday and is expected to last until the middle of July.

* If the amendment is approved by Michigan voters, the state could be among the first, if not the first, state to decriminalize marijuana. Many states have medical marijuana laws, but none has approved complete decriminalization.

* Similar initiatives are due to appear on the November ballot in Colorado and Washington. Even if those initiatives and the one in Michigan pass, marijuana is still illegal on the federal level. Only small-time users would be covered against prosecution by the state laws.

* Organizers are hoping the state-wide crackdown on medical marijuana facilities by Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette can be used in their favor to argue against the vague and ineffective nature of the state’s medical marijuana law, according to the Detroit Free Press.

* Schuette has gone on the record with his opposition to the petition drive. He maintains organizers are just trying to legalize drugs in general.

* Schuette has also been a vocal opponent to the state’s medical marijuana law, and has stated multiple times that he believes it is being abused by people who just want to be able to smoke marijuana.

* Together with Oakland County Prosecutor Jessica Cooper, Schuette has shut down any number of medical marijuana dispensaries within the state, and has arrested hundreds of people.

* If successful, the amendment to the state’s constitution would make driving while under the influence of marijuana akin to driving while under the influence of alcohol, with the same penalties.
