nsnbc : Alleged Peruvian drug kingpin Gerson Galvez, a.k.a. Caracol has been arrested in the El Poblado neighborhood of the city of Medellin, Colombia.
Galvez was arrested on Saturday, in a sting operation. National police of both Colombia and Peru participated in the preparations of the sting operation that resulted in the arrest of “Caracol”.
Colombian police had reportedly tracked Galvez’ movements for several month. He was reportedly in Medellin to establish contacts with the Oficina de Envigado, originally established by the notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar, and to see a Venezuelan woman with whom he maintained a relationship.
The alleged drug kingpin was extradited to Peru within 24 hours after his arrest and handed over to Peruvian authorities after a flight from Bogota to Lima, Peru. Colombia’s Chief of National Police, General Jorge Nieto, told the press that Galvez had been swiftly extradited because his presence in Colombia and Galvez himself posed a danger.
Gerson Galvez had been on Interpol’s wanted list for some time. He will have to face charges including homicide, drug trafficking, and responsibility for leading a criminal organization from the port of Callao, west of the Peruvian capital Lima. Murder charges against Galvez include several high-profile killings, including the murder of rival drug kingpin Tony Montana in 2015 and the assassination of and multiple officials in Peru.
Although Colombia is most often mentioned in relations with cocaine, it is Peru that is the world’s largest producer of cocaine and the second-largest cultivator of the coca plant. It is worth noting that the use of coca leaves, and to a minor degree the use of cocaine was culturally and socially accepted in many, if not most Latin American cultures and countries. The link between organized crime and coca came largely after the drug was prohibited.
