Perth records hottest year since 1978

Perth has recorded its hottest year in more than 30 years.

The West Australian capital recorded its hottest year since 1978 and second hottest on record, with maximum temperatures of 25.7 being two degrees over the long-term average.

Perth also had a significantly wetter year, recording 860.8mm – 10mm over the 850mm yearly average.

Last year was the second driest on record, with just 503.8mm of rain and also the second hottest with average maximum temperatures of 25.3.

The Weather Channel’s senior meteorologist Tom Saunders said the warmer weather was partly due to above-average ocean temperatures in the Indian Ocean.

“Looking ahead for Perth, we expect near average temperatures to return during the coming few months, with slightly above average rainfall likely during this time,” Mr Saunders said.
