Peres: Iran seeks Mideast domination

“Iran’s ambition is to control the Middle East, so it can control a major part of the world’s economy. It must be stopped. And it will be stopped,” Peres said in his speech at the American Israel Public Affairs Conference (AIPAC) in Washington on Sunday.

“[US] President [Barack] Obama is leading and implementing an international, complex and decisive policy, imposing economic and political sanctions against Iran. President Obama made it clear that the US will not permit Iran to become nuclear,” Peres added.

The United States, Israel, and some of their allies accuse Iran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear energy program and have used this pretext to impose international and unilateral sanctions on the Islamic Republic and to call for a military strike against Tehran.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Tel Aviv officials have recently put the Obama administration under pressure to adopt a more aggressive policy towards Iran’s nuclear energy program.

Iran has repeatedly refuted the Western allegations regarding its nuclear energy program, arguing that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it is entitled to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

“Israel experienced the horrors of war. It does not seek it. Peace is always our first option, but, if we are forced to fight, trust me: We shall prevail,” Peres claimed.

The Israeli president’s claims about not seeking war and prevailing in every conflict come as the regime waged a 22-day Christmas war on the densely populated Gaza Strip in 2008 which left more than 1,400 Palestinians dead including at least 300 children.

The Gaza War saw Hamas preventing Tel Aviv from materializing its stated aims of destroying the Palestinian resistance movement.

Fighters with the Lebanese resistance movement of Hezbollah also defended Lebanon against Israeli invaders during the 33-Day War in 2006 and Tel Aviv was compelled to withdraw its troops without having achieved any of its objectives.
