PC shipments sag in 4Q amid lackluster conditions

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Personal computer shipments dipped during the final three months of last year amid a shortage of key parts and compelling innovation.

The portrait of a lackluster PC market emerged in separate reports released Wednesday by research firms Gartner Inc. and IDC.

The preliminary numbers from the two research firms pegged worldwide PC shipments somewhere between 92 million and 93 million during the fourth quarter.

Gartner says its figures showed a 1.4 percent decline from the same period in 2010. By IDC’s calculations, shipments fell just 0.2 percent.

The firms agree that a hard-disk drive shortage caused by October’s severe flooding in Thailand contributed to the downturn. Gartner and IDC analysts say the market also lacked a breakthrough product to lure consumers into stores.
